To say that Lake Catholic likes running at the Frank Gibas Invitational at Kenston High School would be an understatement. It continues to be a PR generating machine for the Cougars. A year after most runners set a blistering pace on the Chagrin Falls course, lightning struck again on a Saturday morning that felt more like late October than early September.
On the boys side, senior Matt Kirchner again led the team with his 4th place finish in 16:37. Junior Alex Hansel was not far behind with his PR of 17:11 and 14th place finish, which earned him a shiny medal. Henry LoConti (Sr) and Chris Bourdess (So) cracked the top 50 with their PR’s of 18:23 and 18:32, respectively. Gabriel DeMitro (Fr), Neil Jones (Fr), Brenden Latkovich (Jr), Alex Mohr (Fr), Sam Hudik (Jr), and Connor Arp (So) also PR’d for the boys varsity team. Overall the boys finished 5th with 154 points, only missing top 3 by 16 points. In the open, freshman Tommy Kaminoski ran a strong 21:28 to finish in the top half of the field. Sophomore Ben Grai also ran a gutsy race while freshman Tristan Simko displayed relentlessness and incredible strength of conviction in the first race of his high school XC career.
Chloe Keating (Jr) again led the girls with her 31st place finish in a tough field, destroying her previous PR with her 21:25. Several other girls showed improvement this week as well. Senior Katelyn McLaughlin finished with a 24:15 and junior Delaney Crowley wasn’t far behind. Freshman Claire Myllykoski continues to show promise and senior Anna Mancari continues to improve.
